While maybe not as prominent as other bands in their field, the addition of saxophone and flute in their music gave them an edge that was a distinguishing attribute to their music. Lead guitarist Toy Caldwell, with brother Tommy on bass, churned out some appealing jamboree-flavored rock as well some charming slow material. Only eight tracks make up this sparse hits collection, and even though it includes their two biggest singles with “Fire on the Mountain” and the beautiful “Heard It in a Love Song,” it’s not enough to truly represent this band’s music. The album kicks off with “Can’t You See,” made famous by country superstar Waylon Jennings in 1976, as well as FM radio staples “24 Hours at a Time” and “Searchin’ for a Rainbow.” With over 13 albums under their belt, the spirited mix of traditional country and electrified rock that exists in the Marshall Tucker Band’s repertoire is impossible to appreciate within the radius of only eight songs.
